The McKinsey & Company, Capital Projects and Infrastructure Report “The new age of engineering and construction technology” highlights how the engineering and construction (E&C) industry is at the cusp of a new era. New technologies, such as weather risk management, are rapidly transforming all stages of the engineering and construction process, through advanced software, construction-focused hardware, and analytics capabilities.

Weather is one of the top three reasons for missed milestones in the construction industry and built environment, with negative impacts costing billions of dollars. Further, McKinsey explains how innovating new technologies are “…eliminating many of the problems that have dogged the E&C sector for decades…” which includes managing weather risk — to increase the impact of positive events, and to decrease the impact of negative events.

First, during the construction phase, performance dashboard technology helps to “monitor project progress and performance, provide automated dashboards created from field data, and generate manpower updates and view past reports.” Leading performance dashboard technology integrates with hyper-local weather risk solutions to enable weather risk probability for each work breakdown structure (WBS), schedule activity, equipment operation, and crew task.

Second, during the construction phase, document management technology helps project team members to “upload and distribute documents, search all projects across phases, and share information across sites,” for example. Leading document management technology integrates with hyper-local weather risk solutions to share industry standards, best practices, and company protocols regarding weather risk management, weather preparation, and weather recovery.

And third, during the construction phase, safety technology helps to “track and report safety incidents across the job site, and alert workers on safety procedures and provide tips live.” Leading safety technology integrates with hyper-local weather risk solutions. Further, hyper-local weather risk reports with automated delivery to project teams enable proactive and preventive measures, and not reactive and corrective actions, for health, safety and environment (HSE).
