CAMBRIDGE, MA — WeatherBuild®, Decision Support Solutions for the Construction Industry and Built Environment®, is proud to announce the release of a series of features to its thunderstorm alerts for leading contractors, owners and operators. Automated delivery of thunderstorm alerts are a critical component of the WeatherBuild solution — hyper-local weather risk and lightning reports with automated delivery to your project teams. Thunderstorm alerts help project teams and work crews improve situational awareness and make better-informed decisions about weather events, safety risks and probable outcomes.

Thunderstorm alerts now include three levels of severity: Low, Moderate & Severe

WeatherBuild thunderstorm alerts now include three levels of severity — three levels of lightning intensity rates within a storm cell, indicating an increased threat of severe weather moving toward your construction project or site operations. Further, WeatherBuild thunderstorm alerts warn project teams and work crews of high probability of severe weather and weather events including: lightning strikes, high intensity rain events, high intensity wind and wind gust events, hail events, and tornadic activity, for example. Detection of total lightning (both in-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning) acts as early-warning indicators of severe weather.

WeatherBuild Thunderstorm Alert Levels of Severity

  1. Level 1: Low Severity Thunderstorm Alert
    • 3+ lightning flashes per minute
  2. Level 2: Moderate Severity Thunderstorm Alert
    • 12+ lightning flashes per minute
  3. Level 3: Severe / Dangerous Thunderstorm Alert
    • 25+ lightning flashes per minute

Thunderstorm and lightning hazards can cause death or serious bodily harm!

Under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act), employers are required to provide their employees with a place of employment that “is free from recognizable hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious harm to employees.” The courts have interpreted OSHA’s general duty clause to mean that an employer has a legal obligation to provide a workplace free of conditions or activities that either the employer or industry recognizes as hazardous and that cause, or are likely to cause, death or serious physical harm to employees when there is a feasible method to abate the hazard. This includes thunderstorm and lightning hazards that can cause death or serious bodily harm.
