CAMBRIDGE, MA — WeatherBuild®, Decision Support Solutions for the Construction Industry and Built Environment®, is proud to announce the release of a series of features to its thunderstorm alerts for leading contractors, owners and operators. Automated delivery of thunderstorm alerts are a critical component of the WeatherBuild solution — hyper-local weather risk and lightning reports with automated delivery to your project teams. Thunderstorm alerts help project teams improve situational awareness and make better-informed decisions about weather events, safety risks and probable outcomes.

Optimizing automated delivery to your project teams

WeatherBuild thunderstorm alerts are now only issued when your construction project or site operation is within the geo-spatial boundary or “polygon” of the thunderstorm, to help optimize the automated delivery to your project teams. Further, a level 1 polygon is called a “Low Severity Thunderstorm,” a level 2 polygon is called a “Moderate Severity Thunderstorm,” and a level 3 polygon “Dangerous Thunderstorm Alert.” To balance the frequency of thunderstorm alerts, WeatherBuild only issues one thunderstorm alert per project per hour, unless key data elements change such as the severity level.

  1. Level 1: Low Severity Thunderstorm
  2. Level 2: Moderate Severity Thunderstorm
  3. Level 3: Dangerous Thunderstorm Alert

Thunderstorm and lightning hazards can cause death or serious bodily harm!

Under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act), employers are required to provide their employees with a place of employment that “is free from recognizable hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious harm to employees.” The courts have interpreted OSHA’s general duty clause to mean that an employer has a legal obligation to provide a workplace free of conditions or activities that either the employer or industry recognizes as hazardous and that cause, or are likely to cause, death or serious physical harm to employees when there is a feasible method to abate the hazard. This includes thunderstorm and lightning hazards that can cause death or serious bodily harm.
