Most contractors confirm schedules are impacted by severe weather — but few contractors account for weather events in project bids or put in place weather risk management plans!

“The USG + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index (CCI) is a quarterly economic index designed to gauge the outlook for, and resulting confidence in, the commercial construction industry. Recognizing a need to highlight the important contributions of this sector to the nation’s economy, USG Corporation and the U.S. Chamber partnered to produce this first-of-its-kind index. Each quarter, contractors across the country are surveyed in order to better understand their levels of confidence in the industry and top-of-mind concerns” — such as weather risk.

75% of contractors experienced schedule delays due to adverse weather and weather events

As a part of USG + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index, the CCI 2019 Q3 Infographic focuses on risk and resiliency in the construction industry. 75% of the general contractors (GCs) and construction managers (CMs) surveyed experienced schedule delays due to adverse weather and weather events. Further, the CCI Index highlights how the leading contractors are motivated to learn more about weather risk and weather resilience in order to gain a competitive advantage, win more work, and build better projects.

Top 5 reasons to improve weather risk strategies and weather resilience programs

Weather-enabled decision support solutions are mission critical for successful weather risk management — unlike generic weather forecasts and free weather apps, which are fair for a general sense of weather — but without great need for accuracy. Based on the responses to the USG + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index (CCI) survey, drivers for general contractors, construction managers, specialty contractors and trade contractors to improve weather risk strategies and weather resilience programs include the following:

  1. Competitive Advantage of Demonstrating Expertise on Resilience
  2. More Work with Existing Clients
  3. Build Better Projects
  4. Ability to Charge More
  5. Improved Client Relations

About the USG + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index (CCI)

The USG Corporation + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index is a quarterly economic index designed to gauge the outlook for, and resulting confidence in, the commercial construction industry. USG Corporation and the U.S. Chamber produce this Index, along with Dodge Data & Analytics (DD&A). Each quarter, researchers from DD&A source responses from their Contractor Panel of more than 2,700 commercial construction decision-makers in order to better understand their levels of confidence in the industry and other key trends. This panel allows DD&A to provide findings that are representative of the entire U.S. construction industry by geography, size, and type of company.
