CAMBRIDGE, MA — WeatherBuild®, Decision Support Solutions for the Construction Industry and Built Environment®, is proud to announce the release of detailed lightning strike reports for site inspection, risk management, claims management, and warranty management purposes, to better serve leading owners, operators and contractors across the total asset lifecycle of the construction industry and built environment.

Lightning strike details and data elements important to the construction industry and built environment

WeatherBuild’s mission is to leverage weather data, machine learning and predictive analytics to increase productivity, enhance safety and manage risk. In the WeatherBuild Risk™ solution, real-time, hyper-local lightning strike detection alerts, lightning strike reports, and lightning history logs now include lightning strike details such as polarity and intensity, and other data elements important to project and site stakeholders in the construction industry and built environment.

First, the polarity of lightning strikes are either positive or negative. Less than 5% of all lightning strikes, positive polarity lightning strikes are generally associated with stronger electrical fields, and accordingly pose a greater health and safety threat, compared to negative polarity lightning strikes — a positive lightning strike is a net transfer of positive charge from the cloud to the ground. Further, positive polarity lightning is generally limited to only one stroke, whereas negative polarity lightning is generally manifested by at least two strokes.

And second, the amplitude of lightning strikes is the peak current for cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning strikes or the peak radiated field normalized to 30 km for in-cloud (IC) lightning strikes, both measured in amps or amperes (A) — the electromagnetic force between electrical conductors carrying electric current. Depending on your asset types and facility components, strikes above different amplitude thresholds can warrant different types of site inspections, tests and repairs.
