The power of safe choices — both small and large for weather safety and lightning safety
2018 Construction Safety Week (www.constructionsafetyweek.com) was May 7th through May 11th this year. “Safety Week is a chance to show our industry and our communities the commitment we have to safety.” The 2018 Construction Safety Week schedule includes: Company Leaders Personnel Project Visits; Safety Performance Evaluation; Jobsite Safety Reviews; and, Commitment Pledges, for example. “This year’s Safety Week focuses on the power of safe choices — both small and large — and their impact on the industry, community, and each other.”
Recognize lightning as an occupational hazard, and take precautions
In construction safety, thunderstorm and lightning safety are must-haves — critical components of weather safety and weather risk management. Dangerous thunderstorms and lightning strikes can severely injure or kill outdoor workers. Accordingly, it is imperative for all contractors, owners and operators to recognize lightning as an occupational hazard, and take precautions to prevent worker exposure to lightning. Supervisors and workers at all outdoor worksites in the construction industry and built environment need to regard lightning as critical employee safety.
Provide a place of employment free from recognizable hazards such as lightning
Under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act), employers are required to provide their employees with a place of employment that “…is free from recognizable hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious harm to employees…” In the construction industry and built environment, dangerous thunderstorms and lightning strikes are recognizable hazards, likely to cause death or serious harm to employees.
