Severe weather causes numerous deaths and injuries and billions of dollars of damage!
CAMBRIDGE, MA — WeatherBuild®, Decision Support Solutions for the Construction Industry and Built Environment®, is proud to support the Spring Weather Safety Campaign. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, www.noaa.gov) and the National Weather Service (NWS, www.weather.gov), Weather-Ready Nation (WRN, www.weather.gov/wrn) Spring Weather Safety Campaign (weather.gov/wrn/spring-safety) includes numerous weather safety resources such as plans, infographics, videos, presentations, and partners.
During the spring months, the Weather-Ready Nation is focusing on education about spring weather hazards and weather risks for stakeholders and communities across the United States. Across the total asset lifecycle of the construction industry and built environment, spring weather hazards and weather risks include tornadoes, thunderstorms, lightning, flooding, tsunamis and heat, as some of the many examples of weather events that can impact the safety and productivity of outdoor operations.
The Weather-Ready Nation Spring Weather Safety Campaign warns that severe weather causes numerous deaths and injuries, and leads to billions of dollars in damages! The National Weather Service highlights how more than 1,200 tornadoes occur per year in the United States. Thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, strong winds, large hail and lightning strikes. For contractors, owners and operators, it is imperative to put in place spring weather emergency action plan (EAPs) across all projects and sites.
Strong winds during tornadoes can exceed 200 mph, destabilizing construction aids such as temporary elevators, hoists, cranes, scaffolding and platforms, and swing staging. Further, strong winds can cause airborne construction materials, waste and debris. From an insurance perspective, Travelers Technical Bulletin 220503* cautions that “…wind damage to structures under construction leads to millions of dollars in damages and delays. At construction sites, wind damage generally involves masonry walls, framework, forms and roof coverings.”
