Construction accounts for one-third of all work-related lightning fatalities in the US!
CAMBRIDGE, MA — WeatherBuild®, Decision Support Solutions for the Construction Industry and Built Environment®, is proud to announce the release of a white paper on Lightning Emergency Action Plans (L-EAP or LEAP). Weather is one of the top three reasons for missed milestones in the construction industry and built environment, with negative impacts costing billions of dollars. WeatherBuild offers a suite of weather enabled decision support solutions that empower contractors, owners and operators to improve situational awareness and make better-informed decisions about weather events, schedule impacts, safety risks and probable outcomes — including dangerous thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
Lightning strikes can severely injure or kill workers whose jobs involve working outdoors!
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA, www.osha.gov) highlights how “…lightning strikes can severely injure or kill workers whose jobs involve working outdoors… Workers whose jobs involve working outdoors in open spaces, on or near tall objects, or near explosives or conductive materials (e.g., metal) have significant exposure to lightning risks…” including workers operating outdoors in the construction industry and built environment. Further, construction accounts for one-third of all work-related lightning fatalities in the US. Accordingly, ignoring the threat of dangerous thunderstorms and lightning strikes creates a critical gap in your life-safety programs and procedures!
As a part of the WeatherBuild white paper, the Lightning Emergency Action Plan (L-EAP or LEAP) includes the following ten topic areas:
1. Policy statement.
2. Scope and application.
3. Elements.
4. Introduction.
5. OSHA regulations.
6. Definitions.
7. Training.
8. Evacuation.
9. Responsibilities.
10. Procedures and duties.
