OSHA highlights that steel erection is one of the top 10 most hazardous occupations according to BLS fatality data year after year.
ANSI/ASSE A10.13-2011 Safety Requirements for Steel Erection “…standard establishes safety requirements for erecting, handling, fitting, fastening, reinforcing and dismantling of structural steel, plate steel, steel joist and metal deck at a final in-place field site during construction, maintenance and dismantling operations…”, as a part of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) family of Construction & Demolition Standards (A10).
OSHA finds that working on steel surfaces coated with paint or other protective coatings presents slip and fall hazards!
Further, ANSI/ASSE A10.13-2011 Safety Requirements for Steel Erection warns of safety risks when erecting, handling, fitting, fastening, reinforcing and dismantling steel. Fall protection is the greatest safety challenge, as precipitation events, such as rain, snow, sleet, hail, mixed, and frost events, can make walking and working on steel surfaces very slippery. Wind, wind gust, thunderstorm, and lightning events also pose safety risks for trade craft when erecting structural steel, plate steel, steel joist and metal deck.
Included in ANSI/ASSE A10.13-2011 Safety Requirements for Steel Erection are sections, tables and appendices that address the following: Scope, Purpose, and Exceptions; Referenced and Related Standards; Definitions; Job Planning; General; Structures; Dismantling; Mill Work; Hoisting, Welding and Cutting, Scaffolding and Safety Nets; Metal Deck and Temporary Flooring; Connecting; Ladders; Material Handling and Yarding; Work on or Over Water; Personal Protection; Training; and other topics.

About the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
As the voice of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) empowers its members and constituents to strengthen the U.S. marketplace position in the global economy while helping to assure the safety and health of consumers and the protection of the environment.
The Institute oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector: from acoustical devices to construction equipment, from dairy and livestock production to energy distribution, and many more. ANSI is also actively engaged in accreditation – assessing the competence of organizations determining conformance to standards. (Source: https://www.ansi.org/about_ansi/overview/overview?menuid=1)
About the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)
