Top five leading causes of construction site delays: 1. Weather.
Data from CII, the Construction Industry Institute (CII, www.construction-institute.org), IR252-2a – Guide to Activity Analysis and many other leading industry organizations indicate that the top five leading causes of construction site delays are:
- Weather;
- Finding and setting up equipment;
- Overbooked crews;
- Lack of insight, and;
- General waiting.
CII, based at The University of Texas at Austin, is the research and development center for the capital projects industry.
Harnessing the potential of technology to improve the performance of major projects
Further, data from a KPMG (home.kpmg.com) Global Construction Survey, “Building a technology advantage, Harnessing the potential of technology to improve the performance of major projects” reveals that only 25% of contractors delivered construction projects within 10% of original contract dates. Complementing the KPMG Global Construction Survey, data from a McKinsey & Company study “Imagining construction’s digital future” highlights that contractors generally deliver large construction and capital projects 20% behind schedule on average.
